"Quality Inspector / Technician of the Year Award"

Purpose: To provide ASQ, Northeastern PA Section, recognition to "The Inspector / Technicians"' as those who: (1) have the knowledge, qualifications, background and experience to accept or reject a product or process; (2) represent the customer and/or supplier in on-line or final inspection test, audit, calibration, etc.;

(3) assist and/or motivate other peers and workers, supervision, departments, etc., to produce quality products or services while reducing related costs of prevention, appraisal and failures;

(4) train others in inspection methodology and techniques, calibration, defect prevention, failure analysis, data recording, documentation, cost reduction, statistical applications, etc.;

(5) are continuing to professionally develop themselves via quality certifications, technical papers, teaching, taking technical and quality courses in college, trade schools, etc., to maintain themselves as professionals worthy of recognition, rewards, awards and promotions in concert with their goals and objectives. All too often "THE INSPECTOR / TECHNICIAN" receives little or no recognition in today's environment. The purpose then, is to recognize "THE QUALITY INSPECTOR / TECHNICIAN OF THE YEAR".

Eligibility: Any qualified candidate who spends more than

50% of his/her time in inspection, test, audit, calibration, etc., functions to assure conformance to engineering, manufacturing, quality and customer standards or requirements, is eligible as a candidate to receive the award. Managers, supervisors, planners, engineers or associate engineers are not eligible for this award.

Nature Of Award: The Northeastern PA Section of ASQ, will present the Q.I/T.O.Y. a suitable engraved plaque at the annual awards dinner. The Section may also recognize any runner-ups, as may be appropriate, at the discretion of the Q.I/T.O.Y. Award Committee. News releases may be sent to quality related publications both internal and external to ASQ. A suitable photograph of the winner should be made available by the winner for publicity, etc. The decision of the Q.I/T.O.Y. Awards Committee concerning the winner is final.

Presentation: The Q.I/T.O.Y. Award will be presented by the Northeastern PA Section at a General Section Meeting. The Section may take publicity pictures, etc., and will pay for the winner’s dinner. The Q.I/T.O.Y. may also be eligible for recognition as the "Inspector of the Year" presented by the ASQ Inspection Division at the Annual Quality Congress.

Procedure for Nominating Candidates

A. Any member of ASQ can nominate a candidate for this award.

B. The nomination will be in the form of a letter/resume indicating the candidate's experience and contribution to the following items.

1. On job knowledge and abilities
    1. Inspection, test, calibration, audit, etc., abilities (must match type of inspection discipline noted on the application).
    2. Calibration knowledge
    3. Defect prevention and failure analysis abilities
    4. Data recording and recording techniques
    5. Cost reductions
    6. Statistical applications
    7. Any other information related to job knowledge and abilities
2. On the job interpersonal relations
    1. Cooperation with peers
    2. Cooperation with supervision/management
    3. Cooperation with other departments, groups, customers, etc.
3. Training
    1. Help and guidance to manufacturing/service personnel (to make a quality product/provide quality service)
    2. Helping peers in lower inspection classifications, other departments, etc.
4. Professional development a. Types of quality certifications held (CMI, CQT, CQA)

b. Off the job activities

    1. Technical papers presented
    2. Technical publications
    3. Teaching of any technical courses (in or out of company)
    4. Enrollment in any technical courses, quality seminars, ASQ activities, etc.
c. Any other information on applicant's professional development. (See Page 2) C. The nomination must have two supporting signatures of ASQ members and their ASQ member & section numbers. Procedure for Selecting Recipient A. The award committee will be solely responsible for the selection of the recipient.

B. Each nomination letter/resume will be reviewed by each member of the awards committee and they will fill out a rating sheet for each candidate.

C. All the candidate ratings for each candidate will be added together and then averaged. The candidate whose numerical average is the greatest will receive the award.

  1. When submitting a nomination, prepare a letter/resume which summarizes in detail the candidate's attributes and provides an opportunity for the nominator to describe the reasons the candidate should be selected as the Quality Inspector / Technician of the Year.
  2. It is significant to note that a nominee with an ASQ certification (CMI, CQT, CQA, etc.) has a decided advantage over a candidate without credentials, in the point scoring.
